Lazy Sunday Hangover Magma
Hi there everybody! While I nurture my sunday afternoon hangover I found that I forgot to post these links here... so for all of you who are not yet members of the Hub or or the Frog forums...
MAGMA
1974-08-??
La Grande Motte
France
Audience Recording 88 min. very good - partly excellent
01. Kohntarkosz
02. Soi Sowiloi
03. Ptah (cut)
04. Christian Speaks
05. Theusz Hamtahk
06. Band Introduction
07. Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh (cut)
Line-Up:
Christian Vander - drums, vocals
Klaus Blasquiz - vocals, percussion
Janik Top - bass
Michel Graillier - keys
Gerard Bikialo - keys
Brian Godding - guitar
Stella Vander - percussion, vocals
This recording is from an extremely powerful and energetic set Magma played at La Grande Motte in August 1974. The sound quality varies from being a little rough vg during the loud sections to crystal clear in quiet segments. Also, the club seems to be smaller, and the PA distorts a little itself. Christian and Janik definitely play their asses off....

04. MDK (cut)
Line-up:
Christian Vander, Klaus Blasquiz, Janik Top, Michel Graillier, Gerard Bikialo, Brian Godding
I always liked this show a lot, Janik Top and Christian Vander are playing very tight especially on this one.Claude Olmos had left the group by this time, and Brian Godding was shortly in on guitar during June/July and probably August 74. This tape and the Grande Motte being the only known live tapes with him.
I am actually still wondering, if this might not as well be a soundboard tape, the bass sound is so clear and upfront in the mix without interfering with any of the other instruments. All instruments are clearly audible. I think it sounds pretty good. As with all Magma shows from this era, and to get the real idea of how dynamic the playing of this line-up was: PLAY THEM LOUD!

Not very good sounding, here we have the only other british audience tape from 1974 to have surfaced so far. I would say this is for completists only. Then again, if you ever enjoyed the infamous Ponts de Ces 73 tape, this one's for you...

Line-Up: Vander, Blasquiz, Top, Olmos, Graillier, Bikialo
Here we have a very decent sounding audience tape from London 1974 (not to be mistaken with the BBC recordings from the same year). This tape just surfaced some years ago, and it is one of the more enjoyable ones sound-wise.
Unfortunately, Kohntarkosz is cut.
Another thing that is interesting is the intro tapes you can hear. At Ork Alarm website, this description of intro tapes (with clocks ticking away) is linked to a 1973 Yeovil performance. Seems like they used these intro tapes for a longer period than just 1973.
This is the last decent sounding tape from 1974 i have to offer, after a rather rough sounding tape from Colston Hall, Bristol 1974, which will be next, we will move on to 1975 and the great Paganotti/Wideman/Lockwood era......
Enjoy!

Another one from 1974.....sound is so-so, but the show is pretty rare. Never saw it listed actually, happy that i finally got this. My guess is that this is from around April. Actual date unknown.

Here is an audience tape from Tinqueux 1974. The recording sounds ok, not the best, but really listenable. The quality gets better after Theusz Hamtaahk, which is more muffled than the rest of the show. Nice Gamma Anteria

Audience recording from Hippodrome, Douai 1974. The sound is not too good on this one, first of all because it seems to be quite a big venue, so there is a lot of ãroom" on the tape.I have removed the Ptah from this show, as it has been officially released on the Korusz CD. This is the best version I have come to hear, but obviously there must be better generation copies out there. At least if you listen to the Korusz release you will agree. Although i am not sure if the tape from that CD is the same source as this.

Thanks so much for your good work! I stumbled across this site a year ago as my Magma journey was just beginning. Didn't download it because i was low on space and still had studio albums i hadn't digested. Now I've been through all their albums, and Offering's and Jannick's, and the most common boots, so some of these rare ones really interest me. Ufortunately rapidshare says the links are down. If you ever have a spare minute, email me at erict27 [at] gmail dot com to let me know how to access the links and learn more about Magma.
